Why is my mac so slow?

It takes FOREVER to load websites on the Internet, and it takes really long to buffer videos and shows. Hell it even took like 12 minutes just to wait to make this stupid question. My mac is kinda old, a few years maybe. but it still seemed to work fine until this week. What's wrong with my apple mac?
